Updated October 2026 · Written by Ivan from Avantgarde Ski: born and raised in Bansko, former ski racer. Our shop is next to the gondola, so we see every busy and every quiet week of the season.
The Bansko season runs from mid-December to mid-April. It’s busiest at New Year and from mid-February to the first week of March, when UK, Romanian and Bulgarian school holidays fill the town. For good snow and fewer people, come in the second half of January or in March – March is the month we’d pick ourselves.
Winter 2026/27 week by week (weeks start on Monday). The crowd levels come from our shop’s past seasons, this winter’s school holidays and the dates our website visitors are already pricing.
Crowds
Snow, usually
Week by week
The season usually opens in mid-December. Snow is still building, so not every run is open. The week of Christmas and especially New Year is the busiest of the whole winter: everyone is on holiday at once.
January
Busy until about 10 January (Romanian and Greek schools are still off), then the town empties. The second half of January is one of the best-value times to come: few people, good snow, cold and clear days. The snowboard World Cup is on 16-17 January.
February
From the second week it’s peak season: the UK half-term (15-19 Feb) and the Romanian ski weeks (15 Feb – 7 Mar) overlap. Expect queues and book everything early. The snow is usually good.
March
Our favourite month – see below. After the first week the holiday crowds are gone, the days are long and the snow is the deepest of the season. From about the third week it gets softer in the afternoons.
April
Spring skiing: soft, slushy snow by midday, sunny terraces, quiet slopes. The lifts usually close in mid-April (13 April last season). Outside the season you can ski-tour if there is snow.
The only catch: from about the third week of March the snow turns soft and slushy in the afternoon, so ski the mornings.
Three countries decide how busy Bansko is: the UK, Romania and Bulgaria.
| Country | Christmas / New Year | Later in the season |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | Christmas: from 19 Dec (most schools) to 3 Jan | February half-term: 15-19 Feb in England and Scotland, 8-12 Feb in Wales; Easter holidays from 27 Mar |
| Romania | Winter holiday: 23 Dec – 10 Jan | Ski week, set by county: 15-21 Feb (e.g. Cluj), 22-28 Feb (Bucharest and most counties), 1-7 Mar (a few) |
| Bulgaria | Christmas: 24 Dec – 3 Jan | School break 30 Jan – 2 Feb; spring holiday 3-11 Apr. 3 March is a Wednesday in 2027 – no long weekend |
| Greece | Christmas: 24 Dec – 7 Jan | Clean Monday long weekend: 13-15 Mar |
| Israel | Hanukkah: 4-12 Dec | Purim 22-23 Mar; Israelis like to come in March |
From the official 2026/27 school calendars (English and Scottish councils, the Welsh government, the Romanian and Bulgarian education ministries). Some English schools finish a day or two earlier for Christmas – check your own school’s dates.
Usually from mid-January to the third week of March. Before mid-January the base is still building and not every run is always open; after the third week of March the snow gets slushy by midday. In a normal winter December is fine for skiing, but the snow isn’t guaranteed.
The resort hasn’t announced the 2026/27 opening date yet – it’s published on banskoski.com shortly before. Last season it opened on 13 December 2025 and the lifts ran until 13 April 2026; the season before, it opened early, on 6 December. Big events also fill weekends: the EXE winter festival was on 14-15 March 2026 (2027 not announced yet).
March, if you want long days, deep snow and fewer people; the second half of January if you want the quietest slopes. Avoid New Year and mid-February to early March if you don’t like crowds.
Over New Year, and from mid-February to the first week of March: the UK half-term is 15-19 February and the Romanian ski weeks run from 15 February to 7 March 2027.
Usually mid-December to mid-April. Last season ran from 13 December 2025 to 13 April 2026; the 2026/27 dates are not announced yet.
Usually yes – March often has the deepest snow of the season and fresh snowfalls. From about the third week it gets soft in the afternoons.
Yes – 15-19 February 2027 is one of the two busiest weeks, because it overlaps with the first Romanian ski week.
