The Bansko gondola: opening times, queues and the way down

Updated October 2026 · Written by Ivan from Avantgarde Ski: born and raised in Bansko, former ski racer. Our shop is 100 m from the gondola, so we watch this queue every morning of the season.

The Bansko gondola runs from 08:30 to 17:00, and in peak weeks it often opens earlier. The queue is worst between 09:00 and 12:00; if you’re there early, you usually wait less than 30 minutes, even on the busiest days. Don’t forget the way down: when the ski road to town is closed, the queue for the gondola down can be longer than the one in the morning.

Bansko gondola opening times

Officially the gondola runs 08:30–17:00 and the lifts on the mountain 08:45–16:15 (banskoski.com). In the busiest February weeks it sometimes starts as early as 07:30. That’s decided case by case and announced during the season, not before – so on a peak-week morning, being early is never wasted.

It goes from town up to Banderishka polyana, the hub of the ski area, where the beginner slopes are and where instructors meet their groups.

What does the day at the gondola look like?

A typical peak-season day, from the shop next door:

Don’t be put off by a long line early in the morning: before the gondola starts the line doesn’t move, but it’s not as dense as it is after 09:00, and it goes quickly once it opens.

How to beat the queue

  1. Be there early. This is the one tip that always works.
  2. Have your lift pass already. Without one you queue twice – first at the ticket office. Buy it the evening before: see Bansko lift pass prices and where to buy.
  3. Don’t carry your skis from the hotel. Rent from a shop next to the gondola and leave the skis there overnight; you walk over in your boots. On peak days we open earlier, and we help you get out of the door fast – we’ll put on and buckle your boots with you (ski rental next to the gondola). On busy mornings the queue stretches along the street towards our shop, so from our door you join it just by crossing the street.
  4. Skis or not, it’s the same queue – skis don’t go up separately.
  5. Only use the fast track if you’re allowed to. It’s for season-pass holders and people working on the mountain, at the entrance facing the mountain. There’s nothing worse than queueing there and being turned back.

Getting down at the end of the day

This matters as much as going up. When Ski road 1 down to town is open, you can ski back to Bansko. When it’s closed, everyone comes down by gondola – and the queue can take hours.

Shuttles and driving up to Banderitsa

Driving up is possible, but parking at the top is limited, so you have to be as early as for the gondola. Don’t drive up after fresh snow: one stuck car on the road and you’re stuck too.

Be careful with shuttles to the top. Many people try to profit from the queue:

  • prices go up to €20 per person;
  • many aren’t official, and can be stopped on the way;
  • many drop you at the Mosta or Shiligarnika lift stations instead of Banderishka polyana – not okay for beginners;
  • check the vehicle: some drivers squeeze in extra people on a fishing chair – not safe.

Don’t act desperate. Agreeing to anything can turn into a bigger adventure than the queue itself. If your hotel runs its own shuttle to the top, that’s fine – you can take your rental skis on it.

Coming as a group? We can help you arrange an official shuttle to Banderishka polyana – ask us when you book.
