Bansko is a small town with long history
MAINLY KNOWN FOR BEING A SKI RESORT NOWADAYS
Bansko has been cultural and market center for decades in the past
Bansko is located in a unique environment in a valley between three of the tallest bulgarian mountains.
The locals have always had ambitious and clear aims and the signs of that can be found throughout the whole city. Be it the big church which was constructed during a time of Ottoman rule or the notable cultural achievements of the citizens, who have left a solid mark in the history of the country. Some of the most well known historical figures born in the town are Paisii, who was the first to write a book describing the history of the country, Neofit Rilski, who was one of the first teachers in Bulgaria and is a key figure in bulgarian enlightenment and the poet Nikola Vaptzarov, whose poems are considered to be a great example of bulgarian literature.
The tales and stories of our ancestors travelling around Europe a long time ago, before there was advanced transport systems, are still passed between us, the locals. We still believe that the most important factor for the development of the city is the awaken spirit, always searching for something new, but also preserving the traditions as they were decades ago. There is a festival, where people dress in traditional costumes on the 1st of January every year. If you are in Bansko around that time, we highly recommend joining us on the main square of the town.
The locals started with the winter activities in the middle of the last century
However, the gross development of the resort began in the period 2002-2003, when the majority of the ski slopes were constructed.
The locals started with the winter activities in the middle of the last century. However, the gross development of the resort began in the period 2002-2003, when the majority of the ski slopes were constructed. The ski runs length amounts to around 100 km, all located on an altitude between 1000 and 2500 meters. From the icy Tomba slope, which hosts the Ski World Cup, to the long and flat ski road, the resort offers good conditions for everyone. The lifts, artificial snow system and the snow grooming machines are of top level and are being updated yearly.
The Ski World Cup races, being hosted annually, are a proof of the high quality of the resort. Furthermore, the mineral springs in the nearby towns of Banya and Dobrinishte offer perfect conditions for relax after a good day in the mountains.
Although the main focus is always on the winter season, you shouldn’t underestimate the possibilities that Bansko offers during the summer.
If you enjoy cultural activities, Bansko offers a range of festivals, including Balkan Music Festival, International Jazz Festival and the Opera Fest. As mentioned above, the town was the home of major figures from the history of Bulgaria and you can learn more about them or the lifestyle of the locals if you visit the museums around the historic part of the city.
